[MERRY CHRISTMAS [personal profile] colormyspoon! She actually requested this last year and I never wrote it oops? But this goes along with that Sam/Elena PSL that we are edging our way around. Elena is AU from the end of S3 and Sam is pre-series. Also this is becoming an AU where I fix ALL THE PROBLEMS. So deal with that.]

If Jeremy hadn’t coming out to visit her, Elena wouldn’t even be here.

She would have been on a plane already, heading back home to Mystic Falls to try and have a somewhat normal Christmas after a very normal first semester. It’s been nice. Weird, but nice. Klaus isn’t breathing down her neck twenty four hours a day. There aren’t vampires every time she turns a corner. She’s just Elena Gilbert, college student. It’s such a nice change of pace from Elena Gilbert, Petrova doppelganger.

The only downside is that Elena Gilbert, college student, means dressing up in red and green felt at Christmas as part of a community service project. She doesn’t mind, really. It’s for the kids, and Elena likes being able to help. She’d like it more if her brother would stop taking pictures.

“Do not make me take away your phone.”

“Wait, wait, wait. One more.” Jeremy holds up his phone with a grin before snapping a quick shot. “And that one I’m sending to Alaric. We can put it on the pseudo-family Christmas card.”

She laughs a bit, before moving to look over his shoulder at the picture. “How is Ric doing anyway?”

“Good. He and Meredith are good, especially now that his whole … split personality thing is under control.”

“And everybody else?”

“They’re good. They miss you.”

She nods a bit, resting her chin on his shoulder. “I miss them too. But I like it out here.”

“I can tell. It looks good on you.”

“Elena!”
One of the people running the event is waving her down to try and get her attention, and she gives Jeremy’s shoulder a squeeze as she pulls away.

“No more pictures. I gotta go.”

He shouts something after her about her not being the boss of him, but she chooses not to hear it. She has a job to do and she’s not going to let her brother’s mocking ruin it for her. She makes her way around to the stage where a very tall Santa is fidgeting with his beard. She smirks, making her way closer.

“They weren’t kidding about that thing being itchy.”

“Yeah, I guess not.” There’s a pause, a long one where Elena can hear the material of the costume shifting. She’s not quite paying attention, looking out over the crowd of children waiting to see Santa. “Hey, Elena.”

Santa knows her name.

She blinks, before turning back to look at him. She can’t tell much due to the bulk of the costume, but she will grab his arm, using it as leverage so that she can look him in the eyes more. Apparently no matter what Elena you’re dealing with, she still doesn’t always know the merit of personal space.

“Sam?”

She doesn’t know Sam well. He’s in her English class, he’s smart, and he’s very tall—that’s about the extent of it. Still, he seems like a nice guy, which is probably why he’s okay with Elena’s invasion of his personal space.

Or maybe the Santa suit is just hiding how much he wants her to go away. He laughs awkwardly, and she can see the beard twist a bit to show he must be smiling. “Yeah. I’m surprised you got roped into this too. Isn’t your family back east?”

“Normally, yeah, but my brother flew out for the holidays instead. I have my own place, so we’re going to have a low key Gilbert Christmas here instead.” Having her own apartment at school was more of a necessity than an option. She doesn’t want to run the risk of vampires or hybrids being able to enter her dorm uninvited. She may have been trying to be a normal girl but that doesn’t mean she’s stupid. “It’ll be nice. I haven’t seen him in months.”

“That sounds nice.”

“It will be, hopefully.” She glances back to him with a smile. “What are you doing for Christmas?”

He shrugs. “Working for the morning. After that, probably bad movies and catching up on the reading for next semester.”

Elena frowns at that. Sam probably shouldn’t have told her that he is going to be alone for Christmas. “You’re not going to see your family?”

“We’re not that close. I haven’t seen them since I left for school, actually.”

She frowns even more. “What about friends? Anyone in town?”

“Nope. Just me.” He shrugs again. “We were never that big on holidays anyway. I’ll be okay.”

Elena is entirely convinced he won’t. It’s why she reaches for his arm again, bringing his attention back to her. “You should come have dinner with me and Jeremy.”

Sam blinks at her, startled. “What? No, Elena, I can’t do that.”

“Yes, you can. You’re coming. I’m not going to take no for an answer.”

“But your brother—”

“Jeremy is going to be here all of winter break. I think he can live with one dinner with other people involved. And it’s not like I’m even cooking—we’re ordering out.” If there’s one thing that Elena Gilbert doesn’t do, it’s cook. She learned that one the hard way. “You don’t seem like you have some kind of life threatening disease, and you said yourself that you’re working in the morning, not the evening. You are officially out of excuses.”

Sam watches her for a long moment. “There’s nothing I can say to get me out of this?”

“Nope. Nothing.”

He sighs. “Alright. What time should I be there?”

“Dinner’s at four.” She’s pleased with herself, to say the least. “Don’t be late.”

“I won’t. I have a feeling if I am, I’ll never hear the end of it.” She grins again at that, before the curtains part, and he’s forced to play the part of Santa. He gives a less than eager wave, before starting to make his way towards the chair. “Why do I have a feeling I’m going to regret this?”

“Tis the season, Sam. Better get with the spirit.”

She can’t promise that one of the kids won’t puke on him, but she’s sure that most of their smiles will be worth it.
